Question by DrewDeezee: How much does it cost to get a bottle of water to Haiti?
I have seen tens of millions of dollars raised to support relief efforts in Haiti, so why are there currently so many problems with hunger and dehydration? I understand that it will cost millions to clean up and rebuild the shattered country, but should future spending needs outrank immediate necessities?
With so much money being poured into the effort (which I believe will be highly exploited anyways) how much is it costing to get a simple bottle or even gallon of water into the country? Are we really unable to put this money to use quickly and effectively?

There’s something like 500,000 people homeless due to the quake. If you only look at those and work on a very conservative 2 litres per person per day that’s 1 million litres of water a day needed. That’s 1000 metric tons of water a day needed. Flying water out in those quantities simply isn’t viable.
The only realistic options are rapid repair of sanitation facilities and import of water filtration and purification equipment.
